Application Information

Applicants Seeking a Master of Science Degree

Applicants for admission to the program in Computational Mathematics leading to a Master of Science degree are expected to have completed a bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science or statistics with at least a 3.0 grade point average. An applicant should also have completed two semesters of calculus, one semester of a programming language, and one semester of statistics. Applicants who do not meet all these requirements but have a strong academic and/or work background in one of the three disciplines will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

For all applicants, there is no fee for on-line applications.

For U.S. students, materials required for review include:

  1. Official transcripts of all undergraduate work and any previous graduate work.

  2. Official scores from the general exam of the GRE. Subject area examinations are not required.

  3. Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should be from an academic source. (Print and complete the appropriate portion of this Recommendation Form (pdf))

  4. A brief (not to exceed 500 words) statement of purpose in seeking the M.S. degree in Computational Mathematics.



Application Deadlines


Applications for admission as a degree candidate with financial aid should be submitted no later than March 1 for the academic year beginning in the following September. Candidates applying for admission without financial aid may apply up to one month prior to the beginning of the term in which the student desires to begin graduate work. For the fall semester, such applications are due August 1.

Non-degree Applicants

Non-degree students may earn up to six credits in the program. Non-degree admission is based on a review of transcripts for previous academic work. A TOEFL score report is also required for students for whom English is not a primary language. Once admitted to the program as a non-degree student, enrollment in specific courses requires consultation with the graduate director and/or the course instructors.
